Happy St. Patty's Day!

We celebrated a day early this year, but it was all green and shamrocks all the same!

St. Patty's Day is always a favorite for celebrations, a time to wear green, make our food and drink green and of course celebrate all that is Irish.

Our mamas and kiddies came out to done little leprechan hats, make pots of gold full of shamrocks and treasures and of course eat shamrock treats with green drinks.

The kids look so cute in their little hats, even our smallest tots today doned their hats with pride!

The pot of gold craft was a hit. the kids decorated gold pots (ok, they were yellow cups) with stickers and "planted" a clover.

They were then lucky enough to fill their golden pots with treasure (candy!!!).

To top off the day and the fun, shamrock cookies with green sprinkles and green kool-aid made for the perfect treat!

momstown mamas sure know how to celebrate!

Messy Fun with Cloud Dough!!

This week our Little Scientist program started up again and with our monthly theme being all about our senses, I thought the sense of touch would make for some great science fun!

The kids all gathered on the kitchen floor, much easier to contain mess and clean, and prepared to make cloud dough... none of them knew what was coming!

We scooped 4 cups of plain all purpose flour into trays. Flour on its own is soft and fluffy, but when we added 1/2 cup of baby oil and mixed super well, the dough was silky and no longer stuck like flour!

We could mould it and play with it and the couldy softness just got more fun!

TO make the dough pretty we added sparkles... perhaps a little more than we planned! The added sparkles intrigued some of the little ones that weren't too sure about getting messy and they were soon all mixing and playing with the cloud dough.

What we discovered with this experiment was that a) flour mixed with baby oil creates soft silky playful dough, b) flour mixed with baby oil is just as messy and not so great for anyone wearing black, c) that even after vaccuming up the could dough the floor was left super slippery, but very shiny!, and d) cloud dough should be played with outdoors.

It was a fun morning and the kids had a blast. And thank goodness for me, none of the moms minded the messy floury pants!

Sharing Breakfast and Making a Difference!

Yesterday we celebrated National Breakfast Day by getting together for a morning of fun with the moms and tots at Wendy's

Kellogg's campaign to Share Your Breakfast was a huge hit and was a great conversation piece for the moms!

Learning about the staggering number of children that can go without breakfast daily is heartbreaking. Our moms agreed that any way we can help a child have a breakfast is worth the effort!!!

Kellogg's is making a huge effort to help those in need and with every marked box of Kellogg's breakfast foods you can help feed a child breakfast! Kellogg's is donating to Breakfast Clubs to feed hungry children so they can start their day of right!

Our kids sure thought that the cereal was an awesome way to start the morning!

Learning about our senses!

This month the momstown theme is our senses. A great theme for the little ones as there are so many fun ways to learn about our senses!

At our Connect the Tots playgroup this week we learned about our 5 senses. The kids knew that their eyes could see, their ears could hear, noses can smell and hands can feel... but when we asked what your mouths did the response was EAT! oh so close guys!!! So we worked on what happens when we eat... taste did not come to their little minds easily, but with some coaxing we got them to agree that mouths can taste.

We decided to do a craft based on our sense of touch. We made a collage out of things that had different feelings.

This kids love gluing anything and giving them the chance to freely glue all the different items was exciting for them! A collage with no rules!

The pom poms were a favorite of course!!!

What sense will we work on next!!!

Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!!

Happy Birthday to Dr. Suess!

One of our momstown mamas got in the full spirit of celebrating Dr. Suess' birthday today! Here is her story!

Dr. Seuss is a pretty big deal in our house. And with his birthday being March 2nd, it was only fitting to have a birthday celebration. So a week in advance the party planning began with my 5 year old daughter taking the lead. It started with her idea to order a half dozen Dr. Seuss cupcakes from Sugar City Cupcakes, a local cupcake bakery.
We have been wanting to try these for a long time now, and finally we had good reason to!! These are vanilla cupcakes with Nerds candy baked inside with a buttercream icing sprinkled with Nerds on top. Our “celebration” started when we stopped and picked up our order on the way home from picking my 4 year old up from preschool.

For lunch we made green eggs and ham. I will admit that the kids were turned off by the colour, but luckily I was able to convince them to eat their lunch.

Once lunch was done our crafting began. We had found so many ideas online, but settled with a couple good ones. We started off by making Thing 1 and Thing 2 using their handprints. These turned out soooo super cute!!

Then we moved on to making our very own paper plate Cat in the Hats. They painted the outside edge of the plate black. Then they cut out their own red strips to glue on the hat. Once all was dry we attached the hat to the plate and created the faces.

We followed this by making a Cat in the Hat afternoon snack which consisted of alternating slices of banana and strawberries on a skewer. The girls enjoyed helping to make this healthy snack and it made for a great patterning activity as well.

After dinner we all enjoyed the delicious Dr. Seuss cupcakes before heading upstairs to get ready for bed which includes our favorite part of the day…storytime. Tonight was all about Dr. Seuss. We purchased a new copy of The Lorax as none of us had heard that one yet.
Storytime at our house is my husband’s deal and at Christmas the girls picked out a Dr. Seuss t-shirt for a gift for him so that he can wear it when they read a Dr. Seuss book. And so of course tonight the t-shirt was brought out (as it has been many times) for our Dr. Seuss read-a-thon.
Tonights selections were The Tooth Book, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, and The Lorax (one story for each of our 3 girls).

Today was a wonderful day of celebrating all things Seuss!!

National Breakfast Day!

momstown wants to help Kellogg’s give back to the Barrie community.

We will be distributing breakfast kits at momstown programs over the next week, and we’d love your support!

In Canada, 1 in 10 children live in poverty, and are at risk of starting their day on an empty stomach.

On March 8th, National Breakfast Day, Kellogg’s will be distributing mini-packs of Rice Krispies cereal nationwide, to raise awareness and reach out to children in the community.

We will be distributing boxes of Rice Krispies at our Wendy's Fun Day! Join us and celebrate breakfast and support the cause!

Kellogg’s will also be donating to Breakfast Clubs of Canada and Breakfast for Learning. You can help by purchasing Kellogg’s cereals – every box equals a donation!

We Share Everything!

What a fun book to read with a group of young kids. Robert Munsch books are always hilarious and always get the kids engaging.

This months book, We Share Everything, was perfect to go along with our theme of Mix and Match.

The adapted board book for younger children was great for the group that showed up, many were in daycare and could relate to the story and not wanting to share.

TO hear the giggles and the things they pointed out in the pictures was so funny!

As usual with our Tales for Tots, we gave away a copy of the book. Our lucky winner was our youngest babe today. Olivia, at only 8 weeks old, attentively listened to the story and held her winning book.

Stay tuned for next months Tales for Tots book, How do dinosaurs eat cookies.
