Little Scientist fun!

Kids love learning and they love exploring.  Add them together and you get the fun of our Little Scientist program.

We did some neat experiments recently with the kids that was so fun!

 

Taking normal household objects and a big bucket of water we learned about density and volume by seeing what items will float and what will sink.

The kids took turns putting items in the bucket and guessing what would float or sink.

Some of the items surprised the kids!  A big apple would float but a small coin would sink!   They learned that it's not all about size!


We also took some fun with Magic Milk!  This one really got the kids excited and some of the moms too!

 For anyone that had not seen the Magic Milk experiment it was so fun to watch the explosion of colours that could be created with just a touch of a cotton swap dipped in the "magic potion"

First we filled a low dish with a bit of milk.  Then we put drops of food colouring in the milk randomly.  

In a separate bowl there was water mixed with some regular old dish soap.  The kids dipped their cotton swab in the "magic potion" (the dish soap mixture) and then touched the tip to the colours in the milk.

The colours magically exploded creating beautiful patterns of colour!

The dish soap breaks the skin of the milk allowing the colours to spread and bloom.  This was lots of fun and an easy one for moms to do at home on a rainy day!

Kids love to learn and science can be so much fun!

We did some magical colouring mixing with our Little Scientists and had a blast learning our primary colours and the colours they can make when they get mixed together!

We made this fun by using some magic paper towels that helped to suck up the coloured water and mix the colours together!

We took some clear cups and added some water.  The kids then helped to colour the water with food colouring.

Once we had all our colourful cups of water ready we took an empty cup and placed it between the colours.

The next step was to add one end of a paper towel in one colour and the other end in the empty cup and then to do the same on the colour we were mixing.

The water crept up the paper towel and then into the empty cup where the colours mixed.

The kids had a blast seeing the new colours that were created!

Our Barrie Tots love being Little Scientist!

Science is fun at all ages and our little ones especially love learning about the wonders of the world through science.

This month with our theme being Outer Space, we took our science experiment to the aliens.

We used a very simple concept of vinegar and baking soda reacting to cause a gas to blow up our aliens!

First we took some balloons and drew on our alien faces.

Then we added about a 1/4 cup of vinegar to an empty water bottle.  We also added about a table spoon of baking soda into our balloons.

We then placed the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. 

When we were ready we tipped the balloons to allow all the baking soda to fall into the bottle and mix with the vinegar.

The results were instant!  The gas and bubbles started to form and the balloons filled up revealing our alien faces!

This got a great reaction from the kids and was fun for the moms too.

Making it rain rainbow colours in Barrie!

Little Scientist was so much fun this week, a little messy, but fun!

Science is a fun and easy way to learn.  Asking the kids questions, making them guess and just showing them cool things will grab their attention and get their little minds working.

This week we made rain... rainbow coloured rain!

We took clear containers full of water and added clouds.   Mounds of shaving cream made the perfect clouds!  We discovered that less was better for allowing the "rain" to come  through.

Once we had our clouds, we were ready to make it rain!  By dropping food colouring on top of the clouds, we waited patiently for the rain to come through.

We were able to see the colours stream through the shaving cream and into the water, looking just like rain!!

The kids were having fun trying to figure out what colour would come through first.

Once we were done learning, the play started!  The fluffy mounds of now colourful shaving cream was too much for the kids to resist!  The dug in and played in the foam until we had to take it away!
